Laboratory of Veterinary Immunology

Immunology is the study of the body’s defense against infection. We are continually exposed to microorganisms, many of which cause disease, and yet become ill only rarely. How does the body defend itself? When infection does occur, how does the body eliminate the invader and cure itself? And why do we develop long-lasting immunity to many infectious diseases encountered once and overcome? These are the questions addressed by immunology, which we study to understand our body’s defenses against infection at the cellular and molecular levels (Janeway’s Immunobiology).

Our group investigates how cells or organisms defend external stressors and adapt to the stress conditions. In particular, 1) we aim to understand how immune cells maintain homeostasis in response to stress in the gut. We are interested in the role of immune cells when gut homeostasis is perturbed, such as dysbiosis or food allergy. Also, 2) we are interested in the molecular mechanisms how cells cope with extreme environmental conditions. To this end, we have been using a non-model unicellular organism, Amoeba proteus.
